Sexual health education is a vital component of a health education program. It is essential that the needs of our diverse student population be addressed. This workshop will provide participants with strategies and resources to increase skill and comfort level in making sexual health and bullying/harassment prevention education more inclusive with a focus on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Participants will:

  • Deepen knowledge of laws and research that support sexual health education.
  • Walk away with developmentally appropriate lessons and activities and enhance skills at answering difficult questions.
  • Gather a variety of resources to create a safe and supportive classroom and school community climate.
  • Workshop Learning Objectives:

    1. Explain at least three reasons why sexual orientation and gender identity must be included within a comprehensive health education curriculum (policies, standards, research)
    2. Describe at least two strategies to adapt lesson plans to make them inclusive for LGBTQ youth
    3. Obtain at least five evidenced-based/informed lessons and learning activities to utilize in the classroom
    4. Identify at least five quality resources to support instruction, professional development, and parent engagement
    5. Demonstrate one’s ability to respond to questions concerning sexual orientation and gender identity
